Popeyes Has a New Chicken Sandwich Coming to Menus

Popeyes New Chicken Sandwich Coming to Menus

This is a “golden” opportunity to try something different.

If you bought school lunch, did you pay with cash each time, or did you have an account where money was deducted from each purchase? Either way, getting through that lunch line so you could get to satiating your hunger and socializing with friends was a big part of your school day.

By depositing Lunch Money FUNds into rewards members’ accounts to be used on its newest chicken sandwich, Popeyes hopes to bring back memories of old lunchtimes. The chicken sandwich battles that resulted in the creation of new breaded chicken sandwiches by most big fast food restaurants are based on this variation.

The battle for chicken sandwiches never truly ended. These days, it’s more like a “Chicken Sandwich Cold War” with occasional skirmishes. In the last month, there have been conflicts over Chickfil-A trying a new chicken club on a pretzel bun and McDonald’s launching Bacon Cajun Ranch McCrispy.

Popeyes is hitting back with its new chicken sandwich and a collaboration with a New Orleans hip-hop duo.

Although adding some spice is perfectly acceptable, it’s good to see Popeyes omitting the heat from a new dish. We’re ready for something milder after last year’s Spicy TRUFF Chicken Sandwich and its most recent two creations, Honey Lemon Pepper Wings and Sweet ‘N Spicy Wings.

Now for the Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich: an all-white, buttermilk-battered chicken breast covered in Golden BBQ sauce and served with barrel-cured pickles on a buttery toasted brioche bun. Applewood smoked bacon and a slice of Havarti cheese are optional extras that guests can add to their sandwiches.

Popeyes is introducing a Lunch Money FUNDS promotion to commemorate the new sandwich. The program promises to bring fun back into lunch by depositing lunch money into the accounts of its Loyalty Rewards Members in exchange for a complimentary chicken sandwich. There’s a catch, though. Members must spend money to earn the points that represent that money.

To market the Golden BBQ Chicken Sandwich, the fast food company is working with the Grammy-nominated saxophonist Albert Allenback and rapper Alfred Banks of SaxKixAve, a New Orleans hip-hop duo, on a song called “Bring Back Lunch.” Banks discloses the catch near the end of the anthem, and it’s more complicated than just the fact that reward members are the only ones eligible.

Fortunately, we know Popeyes chicken sandwiches are delicious—the fast food chain’s original came in number one in a chicken sandwich taste test—so it won’t be too difficult for rewards members to make a $10 purchase before they earn their Lunch Money FUNds.
