I enjoy McDonald’s just because I’ve been coming here since I was young and have hazy childhood memories. Even though I don’t frequently dine there, I always feel obliged to try everything new that they put on the menu. While they have the standard selection of salads, chicken sandwiches, and burgers here in Portugal, their version of the Bifana, known as McBifana (natch), is the most intriguing.
I’ve heard that the McDonald’s restaurants in Portugal serve several traditional foods in addition to their regular menu. I found the closest McDonald’s restaurant and went inside since I always enjoy seeing what those franchises in different countries come up with to please the locals and wow the tourists.
McBifana and Caldo Verde
I went inside the Portuguese McDonald’s and bought a cup of Caldo Verde and a McBifana combo. These two dishes, which rely on Portuguese traditional foods, are exclusive to Portugal. A beef mayonnaise burger was also available; however, I wasn’t sure if it was unique to this place. Let’s observe their characteristics!
Bifana
A Portuguese sandwich of the same name but without the shoehorned “Mc” becomes the model for the McBifana, a stewed pork sandwich with crispy bread. Some of the folks I talked to said that smoked pork can be salted or cooked in a flavorful sauce.
The McBifana uses two grilled pork patties endemic to McDonald’s restaurants everywhere. McDonald’s can probably get away with it this time because, despite what you may think, many Bifana restaurants have recently started using grilled pork in their sandwiches, according to some locals.
Taste test
I quickly opened my McBifana and sat down. Two pieces of hard bread, dusted with flour, held two pork patties. In contrast to the typical American-style burger buns that most of us consume, the bread appeared to be European.
The patty’s mildly sour sauce highlighted the pork’s flavour well, and the wheat bread enhanced this straightforward flavour. You could eat it daily without becoming overly tired, but the taste was not overpowering.
The soft yet filling Caldo Verde
Caldo Verde is a favourite soup in Portuguese cuisine that uses shredded kale. There’s also the addition of mashed potatoes, which gives it a pleasant, mushy texture. The taste is sweet, but it’s the sweetness of fresh vegetables rather than processed sugars. It’s a milky style of taste that fills the stomach and eases the mind.
Beef Mayonnaise Burger
The last item in my Portuguese taste trial was the Beef Mayonnaise Burger, which, as I said earlier, I’m not sure is only sold in this country.
The amount of sauce on this burger is outstanding. The surprisingly juicy patty practically dissolves in mayonnaise, making this highly satisfying fast food burger. It could take off in Japan if they brought it to our shoes. (ed., the Japanese do love their mayo!)
